I am not a “Makeup Junkie”

I am not a “Makeup Junkie”
(2-Minute Read)

That might be a weird thing for a professional makeup artist and beauty brand founder to say, but I’m really not.

Of course I like makeup and all the beauty things, but I would never say that I am an OMG-I-CAN’T-LIVE-WITHOUT-IT, I’VE-GOT-TO-HAVE-IT-THIS-SECOND person.

In fact, very few new products tempt me to rush right out. I mean, there have for sure been plenty of times over the years where I get suckered into the marketing nonsense about how x, y or z is going to make me look more glowy than nuclear waste and more stunning than a slap across the face at the Oscars.

But generally, I am a Lazy Perfection person (hence the name of my book). Simple, easy to use products are what make me happy. Natural, soft, subtly sexy. I just have to believe that, like me, more people want to wear less makeup, but just wear it better.

Die-hard beauty people might say that I’m boring, and yes - I am not an artist who is ever going to put my clients in super bright, trendy colors. I’m unlikely to do a cut crease or significantly overline the lips. I’m convinced that a good brown eyeliner can always look chic, that there is a nude lip color for everyone and that there’s a way to step up the drama of your makeup application without requiring a MA in fine arts or the free time of a house cat.

Now, if bold makeup is your thing, then you do you and send me your best “shut the f*up, Jenny” vibes, or if you’ve got a signature look you’ve been wearing for 30-odd years, then by all means stick with it. Feeling beautiful translates to being beautiful, and I would never try to take that away from anyone.

(Disclaimer: there have been a few times I have tried to take it away from people but I swear they needed a tough love makeup intervention).

So.

All of this leads me to why I have a line of beauty tools.

Tools give you options and variety.

You can apply the same color eyeshadow with 3 different brushes, and it’ll go on differently with each, in intensity, opacity and shape.

You can use a roller, a Gua Sha or a Cryo Tool to help reduce the appearance of puffy under eyes without having to rush right out to find the perfect concealer (spoiler: the perfect concealer does not exist.)

And let’s call a spade a spade. The beauty industry generates just a shit ton of waste, and using up all of one product before you go out to buy another helps to slow demand, which slows production which slows the sourcing and manufacturing cycles and eases the burden on our natural resources. But that’s a topic for another post.

For now, let me just say - beauty tools are the gateway to Lazy Perfection.
